X-RAY OF MASTOID
X-ray Temporal Bone Stenvers View
Temporal Bone Axiolateral (Stenvers)
Region: petrous ridge, temporal bone, internal acoustic meatus, mastoid air cell
Pathology: inflammation of petrous ridge and mastoid air cell, tumor and foreign body of internal acoustic meatus
SID: 100 cm (40 inches)
Central Ray: beam directed at the external auditory meatus (EAM) with 12˚ cephalic angulation
Respiration: suspended
Position:
1. The patient is placed either in an erect
position or in a semi-prone position.
2. Adjust the head to align the Interpapillary Line (IPL) perpendicular to the
IR and to align the midsagittal plane (MSP) parallel to the IR.
3. Align the Inferior orbitomeatal
line (IOML) parallel to the horizontal axis of image receptor (IR).
4. Place the filming temporal
bone on the IR and rotate the head 45° to the IR.
5. Place the temporal bone at the center of IR and place the patient's cheek on
the IR
Collimation: Include all structures of temporal bone from petrous ridge to mastoid process.
Evaluation
1. The entire structures of temporal
bone including petrous
ridge, internal
acoustic meatus, and mastoid
air cell must be clearly visible.
2. The anterior side of the petrous ridges should be shown clearly without
distortion.
3. Bony
labyrinth and tympanic
cavity should be shown below the petrous ridge.
kVp:75, mAs:20
Tip
1. Temporal Bone Axiolateral (Arcelin)
Projection is used as a replacement inspection when patient cannot pose semi-prone
position.
2. It is usual to take twice in order to compare bilateral temporal
bones.
3. It is hard to maintain the pose for patient; the inspection must be done in
a short time.
4. Cone is recommended to use for this inspection.
