X-ray Sternum Lateral (Erect) View




Sternum Lateral (Erect)

Region: sternummanubriumsternal angle

Pathology: fracture of sternum

SID: 180 cm (72 inches)

Central Ray: perpendicular beam directed at the midpoint of jugular notch and xiphoid process

Respiration: suspended with deep inspiration

Position: 

1. The patient is in an erect position.

2. Hyperextend the arm to avoid superimposition with the inspecting area.
3. Align the major axis of sternum to the vertical axis of the image receptor (IR).
4. Place upper margin of the IR 4cm above the jugular notch.

Collimation: Include sternum.

Evaluation: 

1. Sternum should be shown in the true lateral position without superimposition.
2. The image from the proximal portion of manubrium to the distal portion of xiphoid process must be observed.

kVp-75, mAs-25

Tip: 

1. For patient with big breasts, fasten the breasts with bandage.
2. Take dorsal decubitus projection for patient with severe trauma.
