X-RAY OF THORACIC SPINE
X-ray Thoracic Spine A/P View
Thoracic Vertebrae AP (Supine)
Region: thoracic vertebrae, intervertebral space, pedicle, spinous process, costovertebral joint
Pathology: fracture, scoliosis, kyphosis, arthritis, herniated intervertebral disc of thoracic vertebrae
SID: 100 cm (40 inches)
Central Ray: perpendicular beam directed at the 7th thoracic vertebra (T7)
Respiration: suspended expiration
Position
1. The patient is in a supine position.
2. Place the 7th thoracic
vertebra at the center of image receptor (IR), and align the IR
parallel to the spinal
column.
3. Flex hips and knees and fully attach the back on the table to alleviate the
curvature of the of the thoracic
vertebrae.
4. Place the shoulder about 2.5 cm inferior to the upper margin of the IR.
Evaluation
1. Vertebral body from 1st thoracic
vertebra to 12th thoracic vertebra should be aligned in a straight
line.
2. Spinous
process should be aligned at the center of horizontal axis of the
image.
3. Transverse
process should be symmetric to the vertical axis.
kVp-80, mAs-20
Tip
1. Support the back with a pillow to reduce recurvation
of thoracic
vertebra.
2. 7th thoracic vertebra is located 8 ~10 cm below jugular
notch or 5 cm below sternal
angle.
3. In order to use heel effect, place the head anode of X-ray.
