X-RAY OF SCAPHOID

 X-RAY OF SCAPHOID

X-ray Scaphoid A/P View

Scaphoid PA (Modified Stecher)

Region: scaphoid

Pathology: fracture and bony lesion of scaphoid

SID: 100 cm (40 inches)

Central Ray: bean directed at the scaphoid with 20˚ medial angulation

Respiration: unrelated

Position:

1. The patient is placed in a sitting position.
2. Pronate the hand on the image receptor (IR) with 20° slope.
3. Place the hand tightly on the IR and place scaphoid at the center of IR.
4. Adjust the posture to align wrist joint and elbow joint.

Collimation:

Include all structures from proximal portion of metacarpal bone to distal portion of ulna and radius bone.

Evaluation:

1. The entire structures of bones involved in the wrist joint should be observable in the image.
2. Carpal bones are superimposed in the true antero-posterior projection image.
3. Scaphoid should be distinct from other wrist bones and the bone density should be clearly demonstrated.

kVp-52, mAs-05

Tip:

1. Scaphoid is located 2 cm from first metacarpophalangeal joint toward proximal portion and 2 cm lateral when taking postero-anterior projection.
2. Scaphoid can be in flexion toward ulna to show better.
