X-RAY OF FEMUR

X-RAY OF FEMUR

X-ray Femur A/P View

Femur AP

Region: femur

Pathology: fracture and bony lesion of femur

SID: 100 cm (40 inches)

Central Ray: perpendicular beam directed at the center of femur

Respiration: suspended

Position:

1. The patient is placed in a supine position.
2. Place femur at the center of image receptor (IR).
3. To show knee and femur in true antero-posterior projection image, rotate the leg about 5° medially.

Collimation: Include femur and knee joint.

Evaluation:

1. Femur must be immobilized in true antero-posterior projection image.
2. Femoral condyles should be aligned symmetrically with the patella in the center.

kVp-70, mAs-16

Tip:

1. In order to see neck of femur, rotate the leg about 15°~20° in medial direction.

X-ray Femur Lateral View

Femur Lateral

Region: femur

Pathology: fracture and bony lesion of femur

SID: 100 cm (40 inches)

Central Ray: perpendicular beam directed at the femur

Respiration: suspended

Position:

1. The patient is placed either in a lateral decubitus position or in a supine position.
2. Flex the knee of filming side 45° and place bilateral condyles of femur perpendicular to the image receptor (IR).
3. Place the nonfilming leg in front to avoid overlap with the filming leg.
4. Adjust the bottom line of the IR 5cm distal to the knee.

Collimation: Include femur and knee joint.

Evaluation:

1. Patella should be shown in oblique image.
2. Neck of femur and greater trochanter must overlap completely.
